Although, historically these plants were referred to are two different yet similar genera, today, after recent phylogenetic studies, all Sanseveria fall under the Dracaena Genus. These plants are native to Africa, Madagascar and South Asia. The most popular plant in this genus is certainly the Dracaena Trifasciata, commonly called the snake plant, mother in law's tongue or St Georges sword. Known for their easy care and air purifying properties, dracaenas can be a great choice for beginner plant lovers.
Dracaenas prefer a warm, humid environment with bright indirect light, although they will be happy in almost any conditions within the home including shade. All parts of the plant are toxic so they are best kept away from animals and small children. If you are looking for a trouble free plant that purifies the air Sanseveria or Draceana is a good place to start.
